Description
From open journalism and distributed pro-am collaboration to realtime crisis mapping, ambient sensing and distribution, wearable computing, predictive journalism, news AI (artificial intelligence), big data and beyond, this session examines emergent technologies’ ground-level disruptive impact on practical newsgathering, how they are being used, and what lies ahead.Participants will leave with an understanding of seismic shifts to come and critical making for a practical, strategic framework to build the sustainable news services of the future.
QUESTIONS ANSWERED:
What disruptive change and technologies will shape news in the near to medium term?
How will change affect collection, production and markets for news?
What is a journalist’s role in making this happen?
How can journalists critically, and strategically lead and prepare for change?
How can journalists collaborate with citizen mappers to improve the quality of their coverage?
The presentation will be a blend of presentation, Q&A, hands-on design jam and/or exercises, modelling and “play” (as time allocation allows), and discussion.

Proof the link economy pays off: I mentioned the “Ryan Gosling, Journalist” tumblr the other day, and now “Ryan Gosling” has returned the favour by endorsing my Knight News Challenge entry, InvestigateNet in a take on the Ryan Gosling “Hey girl” meme [see the reblog below].
Hilarious!
And it’s true: We do want to bring you together to help each other, so help us help you.
Vote for InvestigateNet with a like, reblog, comment, tweet [with the #NewsChallenge tag], and even something more creative, like “Ryan Gosling” did.
Thanks, girls (and guys).
Hey girl,
I’m a dreamer. I dream of you.
I dream of being together.
Journalists dream of being together, too.
So help these Investigate Net guys put journalists together in the Knight News Challenge.
They did me a solid, girl. They brought us together.
Do me a solid, girl.
Help them bring journalists together.
I love journalism.
And you.

Ryan Gosling, Journalist “Hey girl” meme:
… and a few search results below the Mad Men on Journalism find is another variation of the Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” meme…
Any other pop culture/journalism mash-ups?
Hey girl, I’m here to talk about journalism. I love journalism. Sometimes, when I’m near you, or looking at you, or just thinking of you, I feel like a journalist. That’s just how you make me feel. It’s true, girl. It’s you.
I scan posts about journalism on Tumblr now and then, which sometimes leads to interesting finds.
Looks like last night’s Mad Men premiere inspired a would-be meme about journalism.
Our Comment is free team is running a Q&A session with Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger about what open journalism means and what its future is. You can post your questions from 2.30pm GMT and he’ll be online to answer them 30 minutes later.
